Want to Ace Your Online Job Interview? Here Are 5 Tips.
When it comes to interviewing for a job overseas, face to face interviews are a thing of the past. With video call technology and a vast array of platforms available, online job interviews are the norm. But, how can you make a good impression and show off your personality via screen? Here are 5 tips that will help you ace you online job interview:
1.Do a Test Run with Your Equipment Before the Interview
Thanks to technology, we can experience online job interviews. However, you must proceed with caution. To make a good impression you should make sure your computer, microphone, and camera are all working before the interview begins. The last thing you want to happen is a technological breakdown that will impede your interview. Once your equipment is running smoothly, familiarize yourself with the platform that will be used during the interview. Whether it’s Skype, FaceTime, Zoom, or some other platform, make sure you are familiar with it and comfortable using it.
2.Get the Right Look
Lighting is key when it comes to a video call. If possible choose an interview time when you’ll have lots of natural light. If that’s not a possibility, set up a room with lots of lights so your video will be clear.
Depending on the position you’re interview for, your background will differ. If you’re interviewing for a teaching position, it’s a great idea to have an educational background. You could have a bookshelf, world map, or educational chart behind you. This will show the interviewer you are a serious and conscientious applicant.
3.Eliminate Distractions
Make sure you find a quiet place for your interview. If you live with other people, ask them to leave the home or minimize noise during your interview. If you have pets, keep them out of the interview room. You don’t want your pet cat jumping on your lap mid-interview! Turn off your phone and any background apps that could be disruptive. Your interviewer should have your undivided attention.
4.Be Professional
Although you are doing a job interview in the comfort of your own home, professionalism should not be overlooked. Dress smart as if you are you going to an in-person interview. Sit up straight, look directly into your camera when you’re speaking, and, don’t forget to smile!
5.Practice Makes Perfect
An easy and effective way to practice for your online job interview is to record yourself doing a trial run. Even if you don’t know the questions that you’ll be asked, you can practice introducing yourself, talking about your related job experience, and discussing key points on your resume. Once you are finished your practice run, watch the video recording and look for ways to improve.
